Why Is Root Canal Therapy Necessary?

The main reason a root canal may be necessary is because a tooth has become infected by decay. A cavity, or even a crack so small it may be missed during a regular dental exam, may be enough for bacteria to reach the pulp at the center of your tooth. Signs of an infection can be a toothache or even a tooth that is sensitive to heat, cold, pressure, or sweet foods or drinks. In advanced cases, you may also experience swelling.

To eliminate your discomfort, our dentist may recommend having a root canal performed to remove the infected pulp as soon as possible.

What Happens During a Root Canal?

Before we start the procedure, we will safely administer a local anesthetic to numb your mouth. Once this is done, we then work to remove the decay from the tooth and take out the pulp. The canals of the tooth are cleaned thoroughly and filled to avoid infection. After this is complete, we will crown the tooth to keep it fully protected. This entire procedure takes about an hour in-office to allow you to leave pain-free.
