Periodontal Therapy An Overview

Dr. Tracey Hughes is committed to both patient education and comprehensive care when it comes to gum health. Boulder Valley Dental Center offers screening, diagnosis and treatment for all stages of gum disease with an emphasis on disease prevention through routine dental care.

The gums provide more than aesthetics for your smile- they serve to support the teeth and create a barrier for harmful bacteria, keeping it from entering the bloodstream. Dr. Hughes and your dental hygienist perform a thorough screening for the early signs of gum disease during your routine preventive care visits. Coming in twice a year can go a long way towards keeping your smile healthy and avoiding many common dental problems from becoming complex dental concerns.

Gum Disease: Understanding Each Stage

Periodontal disease

Periodontal disease has two distinct stages, each with varying degrees of severity and a range of possible symptoms.

  • Gingivitis: early stage gum disease often characterized by red, swollen or bleeding gums that may be more sensitive.
  • Periodontitis: advanced gum disease can lead to receding gums, shifting or loose teeth and even tooth loss.

There are many risk factors for gum disease, some of which can be controlled through lifestyle changes and awareness. Dr. Hughes will discuss your medical history, lifestyle habits and other possible risk factors to provide individualized recommendations for keeping your smile as healthy as possible between visits.

Periodontal Therapy What to Expect

Dr. Hughes will assess the condition of your gums and determine the most appropriate treatment for restoring health and repairing any possible damage.

Boulder Valley Dental Center provides advanced treatment options for addressing gum disease. Dr. Hughes is trained in the LANAP procedure and is one of few dentists in the state of Colorado offering this successful laser dentistry treatment for many of the symptoms and effects of gum disease.

What Is LANAP®?

A laser procedure, the LANAP protocol combines just the right amount of energy and the accuracy of  a very fine laser fiber to remove infected tissue below the gum line while stimulating natural healing.

LANAP enables Dr. Hughes to treat gum disease in the comfort of our spa like dentist office with less discomfort, fewer side effects and far less downtime when compared to surgical alternatives.

LANAP requires two sessions of about 90 minutes to completely clean and revitalize gum tissue affected by periodontal disease.
