Dental Fillings An Overview

At some point in their lives, most patients will receive a dental filling to address tooth decay. Dr. Hughes places metal free dental fillings for safe, aesthetically pleasing results that are also highly durable. Dental fillings are an important treatment for reducing the impact of tooth decay and helping you to keep your natural teeth for as long as possible.

A dental filling can also be used to address minor tooth chips and cracks.

Dr. Hughes is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, a distinction that requires extensive post graduate training in all aspects of general dentistry. She is highly trained and qualified to provide the highest standard of dental care for maintaining a healthy smile.

Benefits of Metal Free Dental Fillings

Boulder Valley Dental Center is a metal free practice in an effort to provide the safest dental care for you and your family. Metal free fillings, also known as “white fillings”, provide natural looking results while stabilizing the health of your tooth. Dr. Hughes can replace old, dark or leaky amalgam fillings for an instant smile makeover.

Although the amalgam, or silver, fillings used today contain less mercury than they did years ago, there is still a potential health risk- especially if you have a metal allergy. Over time, silver fillings are know to break down and begin to both “leak” out and allow bacteria back in. New white fillings create a secure seal that is highly effective at preventing future decay or infection.

Dental Fillings What to Expect

Although many patients become slightly anxious at the thought of a dental filling, it is a relatively simple procedure that should produce minimal discomfort with the use of a local anesthetic. Our staff is highly attentive to your needs and will make sure that you feel comfortable and relaxed during your treatment.

Dr. Hughes emphasizes the many benefits of keeping your smile healthy, making it easy to understand the value of addressing tooth decay with a dental filling as soon as possible to avoid more significant damage to the tooth.

A local anesthetic will be applied to numb the area and the decay and infection will be gently removed from the tooth surface. Once cleaned and prepared, a composite material or ceramic will be sculpted into the space and permanently cured in place with a special light. Once complete, the surface will be polished for a comfortable bite and aesthetically pleasing result.

If the tooth decay is located in a larger back tooth, Dr. Hughes may recommend an inlay or onlay, also known as indirect restorations. Using a ceramic material, an inlay or onlay will be custom made in much the same way as a dental crown.
