“Hidden” Gum Infections Can Lead to a Stroke or Heart Disease! Find Out How Comfortable and Quick our Gum Therapies Can Be With Conscious Sedation.
New studies link gum disease to stroke, heart disease, diabetes, low birth-weight babies and more. The truth is, if you haven’t been to a dentist in over 5 years, chances are you have gum disease right now and don’t even know it. Conscious sedation dentistry can help you reverse years of dental neglect in just a few hours.
So what does gum disease have to do with your health? For starters, gum disease is an infection of the tissues that support the teeth, including the bone. As with any infection, bacteria can travel through the bloodstream and affect other areas of the body. Gum disease is usually caused by dental neglect.
The early stages of gum disease, called gingivitis, affects only the gums. Without treatment, the condition progresses into advanced periodontitis, which eventually destroyes gum tissues, ligaments and bone that holds your teeth in place. You healthy teeth can acutally start falling out of your unhealthy gums.
But that’s not the only loss that can occur. As the infection spreads, there is a greater chance that it can reach your heart and other vital organs with serious, sometimes fatal consequences. Studies have made a connection between plaque build-up in the gums and plaque build-up in the arteries.
Some form of gum disease affects as many as 50% of the population. You do not have to be in pain or have symptoms to have gum disease. You could have this serious condition right now and not even know it.
The accumulation of calculus, the hardened plaque that forms around the teeth and under the gum line, leads to gum disease. Calculus deposits form “pockets” in the gums. These deep pockets open the door to spreading infection.
The only way to remove calculus is through regular in-office, professional dental cleanings. The truth is, without frequent cleaning (two to three times per year) gum disease is inevitable.
Perhaps you’re feeling uneasy or anxious about having an oral exam and teeth cleaning. You are not alone, I see guests in our office weekly who have similar anxieties and fears. We acknowledge your fears and can help you experience dentistry unlike you have in the past. I invite you to contact us. Dont let dental anxiety rob you of your enjoyment, your youthful smiles and a healthy life.

I applaud your efforts to provide the best start for your child! Nursing has been shown to help with the development of the jaws and mouth muscles as well as strengthen teeth! However, we do not recommend breastfeeding for a period of 24 hours after the last doses of triazolam. And, we remind families that the nursing mother should not “cuddle up” and take a nap with the nursling. Triazolam is a sedative and can diminish your abilities to fully meet your childs needs.
What can I do to prepare for this period?
The first type of preparation I advise is preparing to feed the baby during this time. Depending on how often your baby nurses, you will need to pump and freeze (for more information on freezing breast milk or breastfeeding, please consult your physician, a lactation consultant or representative of the LaLeche League www.lalecheleague.org ) Generally speaking, an infant requires 50 calories per pound of their weight per day (a 10 pound baby requires 500 calories.) Breast milk contains 20-22 calories per ounce. You will need to supply 2 1/2 ounces of milk per pound of your baby. (a 10-pound baby will require 30 ounces of milk.) Please keep in mind that babies react differently to new situations. Your baby may eat more or less than this amount.
Plan ahead! Although some mothers can express several ounces of breastmilk very quickly, most mothers will require some time to set aside the necessary reserves.
It is vital that you protect your future supply and prevent infection. I called my reserve breastmilk “liquid gold” when I was nursing! While unable to nurse, you will coninue to pump every 2-3 hours and discard this mild. Discard your pumped breast milk after your sedation visit for 24 hours. Be sure to stay well hydrated to assist the medication in evacuating your system.
Your child may feel anxiety at the disruption of their normal schedule. Please plan for their emotional needs as well. Practically speaking, you will not be able to be the sole provider of their care while you are recovering yourself. Be sure a familiar loved one is available for snuggling, singing, and playing games with your child.
Why is it recommended that I not nurse?
The short answer to that question is that sedatives, such as triazolam, are not recommended for children under the age of 3. There are no formal or informal studies available for review. Although only a very small amount will be availalbe to pass through the breast milk, there is no way to know what dosage is safe for a child or infant to ingest. We do know that sedatives can cause respiratory distress in children under 3 years of age. This distress requires immediate attention or can be fatal. Because of the lack of date and severity of the know risk factors, we advise that you do not nurse for a period of no less than 24 hours after your last dose. Plan ahead- pump.
I would be happy to answer any further questions about breastfeeding a baby and oral sedation dentistry.
I too am a mother and have been through nursing with my 2 children in the past.

Some of the most commonly asked questions regarding Sedation Dentistry include “Is it safe?” or “Will it work for me?”. To help you and your loved ones decide if this is right for you, I am going to answer those questions for you before you even have to ask…
There is a choice of sedation medication that can be used. You and I will review many factors like your individual medical history to choose which one is right for you. Most of our patients are administered Triazolam. This medication has been used for many, many years and has now found a home in dentistry. In 1996, it was prescribed over 26,000,000 times. Other medications with similar safety backgrounds, such as Lorazepam and Diazepam (Valium), may also be used for your treatment. The historical safety of these medications gives me great confidence in them. There is even a medication, Flumazenil, available to reverse the effects.
To ensure your safety, shile you are medicated, you are continually monitored for vital signs. Baseline readings are taken at your first visit so I know what is normal for you.
The mose common side effects of this sedation aid are dry mouth and hiccups. The hiccups last only a few moments while you are sedated and the dry mouth wears off with the medication.
You can read more about the fantastic benefits of Sedation Dentistry in the testimonials on our website or in our office. Call us today for the dental appointment of your dreams!
