Our mouths are constantly under assault as we eat during the day. The foods we eat vary in acidity and directly affect the environment of our mouths. Science shows an acidic oral environment puts you at a higher risk for developing cavities. The bacteria that causes cavities thrives in an acidic environment.
So what can I do to prevent an acidic environment?
1. Don’t snack all day, eat complete meals and be done. This allows your mouth time to neutralize after eating acidic foods (which can take up to an hour depending on how acidic the food was you ate).
2. Choose less acidic foods and beverages. Water or drinks that have a neutral pH will not affect the acidity of your mouth.
3. Use products that contain xylitol or fluoride to help neutralize your mouth faster. The quicker your teeth are in a neutral environment the less time cavities have to form.
